Light-Patterned Current Generation in a Droplet Bilayer Array
We have created a 4 × 4 droplet bilayer array comprising light-activatable aqueous droplet bio-pixels. Aqueous droplets containing bacteriorhodopsin (bR), a light-driven proton pump, were arranged on a common hydrogel surface in lipid-containing oil. A separate lipid bilayer formed at the interface between each droplet and the hydrogel; each bilayer then incorporated bR. Electrodes in each drop...
متن کاملA programmable microfluidic static droplet array for droplet generation, transportation, fusion, storage, and retrieval.
We present a programmable microfluidic static droplet array (SDA) device that can perform user-defined multistep combinatorial protocols. It combines the passive storage of aqueous droplets without any external control with integrated microvalves for discrete sample dispensing and dispersion-free unit operation. The addressable picoliter-volume reaction is systematically achieved by consecutive...
متن کاملPeriodic droplet formation in chemically patterned microchannels.
Simulations show that, when a phase-separated binary AB fluid is driven to flow past chemically patterned substrates in a microchannel, the fluid exhibits unique morphological instabilities. For the pattern studied, these instabilities give rise to the simultaneous, periodic formation of monodisperse droplets of A in B and B in A. The system bifurcates between time-independent behavior and diff...
متن کاملMultiplexed droplet Interface bilayer formation.
We present a simple method for the multiplexed formation of droplet interface bilayers (DIBs) using a mechanically operated linear acrylic chamber array. To demonstrate the functionality of the chip design, a lipid membrane permeability assay is performed. We show that multiple, symmetric DIBs can be created and separated using this robust low-cost approach.
متن کاملA microfluidic platform for size-dependent generation of droplet interface bilayer networks on rails.
Droplet interface bilayer (DIB) networks are emerging as a cornerstone technology for the bottom up construction of cell-like and tissue-like structures and bio-devices. They are an exciting and versatile model-membrane platform, seeing increasing use in the disciplines of synthetic biology, chemical biology, and membrane biophysics. DIBs are formed when lipid-coated water-in-oil droplets are b...
